There are an estimated 6000 cenotes in Mexico, but less than half have been explored.
The Yucatan Peninsula is also home to the Longest Underground River and Cave System in the World. A “cenote” (pronounced say-NO-tay) is a natural sinkhole created where a cave ceiling has collapsed, a window to a spectacular world. Cenotes were the only source of water in the jungle for the Mayan civilization and are considered sacred by the Mayan people.
By completing with Enjoy Riviera Maya the Cavern Diver Certification, you will have the knowledge and skills to explore caverns correctly by allowing you to enter a cavern far enough for adventure, but staying within the light zone for an easy exit to open water.
Also, you will learn about other specialized equipment for cavern diving, such as lights and redundant breathing systems. Also, you will know how to avoid disorientation and anti-silting techniques. Finally, you’ll be able to perform dive planning, including depth and distance limits and air management for cavern diving. The Cavern Diver Certification is a scuba certification course recognized by PADI.
*Qualifying certifications from other diver training organization may also apply
**Cenotes are privately owned and run by local Mayan communities. Therefore, the local communities use the money from the entree fee to maintain their land, provide their guests with clean public bathrooms and an eco-friendly water waste system that contribute to the care of the environment and the pride of the town. Some, even build their own open restaurant and palapas on site.
**For fit and comfort, we do recommend getting your own personnel items such as mask, fins and snorkel. If you don’t have them, no worries! We will take care of you!
